Fighting on the Field Leaves Some Questions Unanswered
The fifth episode of Filing For Love picks up exactly where episode 4 left off, with Ki-jun and I-na sharing a passionate kiss inside the art studio. I-na pulls away suddenly, breaking the intense moment, as she is overwhelmed by what just happened.
She ran to the supermarket, trying to get hold of herself, cooled down in front of the freezer and bought loads of alcohol. Meanwhile, Ki-jun takes an unusually long shower at home, which worries A-jeong.
Then he asks her if it’s normal to suddenly have feelings for someone who he has known for a long time. Her simple answer says what he’s starting to figure out.
Family pressure on Jae-yeol
Jae-yeol visits his mother at another place, trying to persuade her to keep taking her medication so she is not sent back to psychiatric care.
Things get even more complicated when his father calls to berate him over the ongoing James scandal. Worried about I-na, Jae-yeol calls A-jeong and tells her to discreetly keep an eye on her.
A-jeong later tries to connect with I-na by inviting her for a drink, insisting that they may have more in common than I-na thinks.
Ki-jun and I-na Fight About Their Kiss
The aftermath of their kiss results in awkward tension between Ki-jun and I-na.
As Ki-jun tries to discuss what happened, the conversation quickly turns into an argument over who started it. I-na apologizes and says it was a mistake due to the atmosphere, trying to end the discussion.
Ki-jun is visibly hurt but accepts her explanation, while commenting on how dismissive her apology sounds.
The Min-woo Investigation Is in the Spotlight
At work, the team receives a new case involving Min-woo, one of Haemu’s top cosmetic sales reps.
His wedding day is brought to chaos when a female client, Yoo-na, causes a stir. She alleges he flirted with her and led her on, and that he gave her reason to believe their relationship was more than professional.
Min-woo defends himself saying he only used charm to increase sales performance.
But Yoo-na has text messages that suggest otherwise. Min-woo says he treats all his clients the same, but things get tense when Yoo-na reveals they kissed.
Min-woo said he could not remember the incident and the case remains unsolved.
The Truth of This Kiss
Ki-jun and I-na dig deeper, re-enacting the events and searching for surveillance footage.
The security cameras nearby are found to be fake but they do eventually get footage from a local chicken shop owner.
The video shows that Yoo-na and Min-woo did kiss.
Proof or not, Min-woo insists it didn’t mean anything because he was drunk.
Later, his own wife is found kissing another man, and his response is ironic. He loses control of his anger and beats up the man and is taken into police custody.
This encounter lays bare the episode’s central theme: the double standard on emotional accountability.
Mystery surrounds the unknown calls made to I-na
I-na gets calls from an unknown number over and over during the episode.
She dismisses them as wrong numbers, but her actions tell a different story.
The mystery deepens when Jae-yeol gives A-jeong a ride home and finds out she lives with Ki-jun.
Ki-jun presses for truth
While having a team dinner to ease the tension between Ki-jun and I-na, the group discusses if a kiss automatically means you are in love.
The opinions are divided but the discussion is obviously a reflection of Ki-jun and I-na’s unfinished business.
Later, Ki-jun helps I-na get a cab and takes the opportunity to ask her directly how she feels about him.
Unsatisfied with her vague answers he gets in with her in the cab and asks if they can give their chemistry a real chance.
Before she can respond, they arrive at her home and she is reunited with her estranged father.
I-na’s Heartbreaking Family History Revealed
Ki-jun moves out of the way as I-na faces her father.
Then, in a shocking turn of events, he collapses. At the hospital, doctors tell him he has a brain tumor, and left treatment to find her.
They also say that he is behind on his medical payments and has no family support, which leaves I-na stunned, as she thought he had a separate family.
Later, drinking with Ki-jun, I-na finally tells her past.
She tells that her mother had an affair with a married man who denied either of them.
This meant she and her mother had to face years of social stigma and bullying.
Things got worse when I-na found out that her mother was a nude model for an art studio. She cut her off, unable to comprehend her choices.
But before she could, her mother died in an accident while trying to apologise.
Later I-na took the modeling job herself and only then did she understand her mother’s quest for freedom and self-expression.
Ki-jun Also Confesses
In response, Ki-jun then shares his painful childhood.
His mother and aunts raised him after his father’s death in a strict home where vulnerability was punished.
He admits he still sleeps with a plush toy for comfort, which his mother would call childish.
This emotional exchange forms a strong bond between the two.
Ki-jun is moved by her story and weeps, then passes out from drinking.
I-na has trouble taking him home, but is surprised when A-jeong opens the apartment door.
Episode Summary
Episode 5 provides one of the most powerful emotional arcs of the season so far.
The writing strips away I-na’s emotional armor, exposing at last the trauma that has shaped her guarded personality. Her confession provides us with important context for her behavior and explains why intimacy is so threatening for her.
The episode also does well to employ the Min-woo storyline as a mirror to showcase the unresolved feelings of Ki-jun and I-na. The show, through this parallel, examines how people find meaning in physical intimacy according to their own emotional needs.
Ki-jun’s development is particularly evident. He doesn’t press I-na for answers aggressively, but slowly starts to understand her pain and comes to her with true empathy.
Visually, the flashback sequences are effective in emphasizing I-na’s isolation with long, distant shots that underscore her emotional loneliness.
Most importantly, the episode highlights double standards of the society regarding gender and emotional responsibility. Min-woo’s inability to stomach the behaviour he once dismissed means this message cannot be overlooked.
Overall, Episode 5 is a very emotional chapter that adds to the romance and the character development, setting up some big emotional consequences for the following episodes.
