Your Friends & Neighbors Episode 9 starts with Coop getting into more trouble. The episode opens with him being tied up in a warehouse, kidnapped by unknown men connected to the stolen money. The kidnappers leave him alone with a knife so he can cut himself free, but warn him to leave the cash alone. When Coop finally gets home it is already morning and he is relieved to find the kids safely asleep on the couch.
Meanwhile, somewhere else, Mel is quietly burying the neighbor’s dog, Arlo, while the owners search desperately nearby. The moment underscores how emotionally spent she is. When Coop shows up, with the kids in tow, the two share a moment and some old feelings come rushing back, but neither seems ready to revisit their relationship in full.
Ali, who has gone missing again, is Coop’s larger worry. He calls Sam for help when he can’t find her at the bar where she used to sing. He hopes her real estate contacts will lead to a place where Ali has been staying, and Sam agrees reluctantly to help him.
The story then moves to Grace’s baby shower, giving the episode a little breather from the tension. The women attempt to enjoy the celebration with games and drinks, but Grace quickly realizes Mel is mentally checked out. Meanwhile the men break apart, laughing about Barney’s vasectomy over drinks that are probably a lot more than they should be.
Things get awkward when Owen Ashe takes the microphone during karaoke and sings to Sam in front of everyone. The gesture goes against Sam’s earlier request to keep such dramatic romantic displays to a minimum, and it’s clear that these two are no longer on the same emotional page anymore.
Later, Coop suspects Ashe of being behind the kidnapping and confronts him. Ashe denies involvement, saying he would never do business that way. It is unclear whether he is lying or not, but the conversation only increases the growing tension between them.
Meanwhile, Coop and Mel come within touching distance before they are interrupted. Instead, Coop turns his attention to Lu, and hands him the valuable baseball-card. Lu says he will check it out, but warns Coop that he is becoming dangerous to the wrong people. Her words clearly strike a chord in him and he starts preparing for another possible assault by keeping a baseball bat handy at home.
No more kidnappers but Elena arrives, mad at Coop’s failure to commit to their plans for the robbery. She tells him he isn’t considering the risks she has to face, especially with her brother’s condition deteriorating. The confrontation does not go well and another key relationship hangs by a thread.
The episode’s biggest twist occurs when Coop finally tells Jack the truth about Owen Ashe’s money. It could be linked to criminal activity, he explains, and Jack is furious Liv didn’t tell him about this. Liv tries to cover for Ashe, saying rich clients often have murky financial backgrounds, but Jack is no longer willing to take the risk and fires her.
In private, Jack confesses to Coop that his prostate cancer has returned, which is why he no longer has the patience for dangerous games. He agrees the money should be returned before the whole situation gets any more out of hand.
Eventually, Coop’s choice leads him, Barney and the others right to Ashe’s house. They find Ashe high on ketamine and Nick confesses that the gyms were being used for money laundering without anyone knowing. Ashe threatens Coop’s family and the confrontation quickly becomes explosive. Ashe, armed and unbalanced, shoots a gun at Coop, causing a panic.
As Ashe chases the group through the house, things get even more chaotic when he falls. He crashes straight into the ground, a savage injury that causes him to bleed heavily. Barney checks for a pulse but leaves Ashe’s fate very much up in the air.
Episode 9 finally gives the season the momentum it’s lacked for weeks. When Coop decides to stop being so passive, a chain reaction is set off that destroys nearly every fragile relationship in his life. The ending is especially good as it mirrors the bloody tension teased earlier in the season, but also leaves the group trapped in yet another disaster of their own making.
Now the biggest mystery is the kidnappers. Ashe denies involvement but still insists the transaction should go ahead, so the episode strongly hints that someone even more dangerous may be controlling the situation behind the scenes. Ashe may have borrowed money from the mafia, making him just another cog in a much larger machine.
With Ashe seemingly dead, the investment in disarray and several characters facing criminal repercussions, the season finale is set for an explosive conclusion next week.
