Becka’s Decision to Tragedy Changes Everything
The Testaments episode 10 opens with the stunning aftermath of Becka’s arrest. Agnes has a hard time coming to terms with what happened after reading the official autopsy report. The report reveals the brutal scale of the murder of Commander Grove. Becka did not panic. She repeatedly attacked her abusive father, leaving investigators shocked by the violence of the crime.
At school, the mood is tense when Vidala tells them that Becka won’t be coming to class anymore, after her father’s death. Although the other girls are still oblivious to what is really going on, Agnes cannot hide her anger and grief. Becka’s situation has deeply affected her, as evidenced by her emotional outburst at Garth outside the building.
Even when Aunt Estee intervenes, Agnes is not punished for openly striking Garth, something that would never be tolerated in Gilead. The moment shows how disturbed everyone has become by the murder.
Becka Encounters a Cruel Fate
Afterwards, Aunt Lydia pays a visit to Becka in prison, hoping she can still protect the young girl from the brutal consequences that await. But the prison authorities are not very sympathetic. Commander Judd is enraged over the scandal, especially since a respected Commander was killed by his own daughter.
Instead of killing Becka on the spot, Judd opts for what he considers a “merciful” punishment. Becka will be sent to the Red Center, forced to be a Handmaid.
The decision perfectly reflects Gilead’s twisted morality where survival itself becomes a form of suffering.
Agnes & the Girls Fight Back
Daisy, Hulda and Shu finally learn the truth about Becka’s abuse as rumors fly through the school. The group know they can’t keep quiet any longer and start looking for a way to help their friend.
Finally, Agnes confronts Vidala arguing that the doctrines of Gilead created the conditions that made Becka’s act of violence possible. And Vidala is visibly shaken by her emotional speech, especially when Agnes bitterly points out that with all their prayers and rules, nobody protected Becka.
Agnes meanwhile seeks out Commander Weston for help. At first he dismisses her fears, but it takes a turn when Agnes confesses she was abused by Commander Grove years ago as well. Weston is taken aback by the confession but finally agrees to intervene.
Because of his influence Becka is released from prison, on a temporary basis, and allowed to go home but under constant surveillance while further questioning takes place.
Daisy Won’t Give Up the Fight
Meanwhile, the resistance group Mayday secretly arranges for Daisy to escape from Gilead. Daisy is smuggled over the border in a barrel and is re-united with June at the docks.
June thinks Daisy is going crazy and wants her taken off the mission all together. The conversation changes when Daisy starts talking about Agnes and what life is like in Gilead. June’s voice softens as she sees her daughter still fighting for life.
Daisy, instead of giving up the fight, is determined to go back and help save the girls trapped in Gilead. At last June gives a nod.
Daisy returns to the school, and immediately is back to pushing Aunt Lydia to save Becka. Lydia’s boldness forces her to do something of consequence at last, instead of standing idle.
Lydia & Vidala Take a Dangerous Decision
A major turning point in the episode is when Lydia and Vidala secretly meet to talk about Becka’s future. They know there may be only one way to protect her from becoming a handmaid.
The idea is to re-tell the story behind the death of Commander Grove. Becka will not take the blame for the murder, but her mother will confess instead.
The sacrifice is heartbreaking because it means Becka’s mother chooses execution knowing that she is saving her daughter from a lifetime of slavery.
At the same time, Agnes faces another personal setback when Commander Weston breaks off their engagement in response to her confession of Grove’s abuse. Paula, in furious desperation, furious that Agnes lost such prestigious marriage opportunity.
The confrontation leads Agnes to Garth, and she finally admits her feelings and asks him to go forward with their engagement plans despite all that is going on around them.
Becka’s Wedding and Her Mother’s Death
Becka manages to avoid becoming a Handmaid, but her freedom is bought at a terrible price. Her mother is executed in front of the Commanders, sacrificing herself fully to save her daughter’s life.
The emotional weight of the scene captures the episode’s essential message: mothers will fight for their daughters, no matter what.
After the execution Becka marries Garth. In the final moments of the ceremony aftermath, Garth secures the bedroom door after laying Becka safely on the bed. The series deliberately leaves the scene vague, but it strongly suggests that Garth is trying to protect Becka emotionally, rather than force intimacy on her.
His actions show a surprising compassion in his character and suggest he may become one of the few decent men in Gilead’s brutal system.
The Truth About June Is Here At Last
Near the end of the finale, Daisy finally spills the beans to Agnes about June. Knowing that June is her mother changes Agnes completely, and it gives the story a new emotional direction moving forward.
Aunt Lydia also gives us an important piece of information: June never stopped fighting Gilead. The moment links The Testaments more directly to The Handmaid’s Tale, and sets the stage for the next phase of the resistance.
Daisy chooses not to run away forever, figuring the fight against Gilead is far from over.
Episode Recap
While obviously setting the stage for Season 2, the Season 1 finale is also an emotional and satisfying conclusion. Becka’s story is the most emotionally moving, especially with the heartbreaking sacrifice her mother makes.
The episode further cements the bond between mothers and daughters, a theme that has been a staple of both The Testaments and The Handmaid’s Tale for a long time.
There are still some obvious writing problems. Daisy crosses the Gilead border far too easily than previous portrayals of the regime’s security system, and a number of characters openly challenge authority without facing the brutal punishments viewers would normally expect.
But despite these flaws, the finale works through character development. Agnes gets braver, Lydia more conflicted, and Garth is one of the more interesting surprises in the story.
Most importantly, the ending leaves the future open. Agnes has learned the truth about June, Daisy remains in the resistance, and even Gilead itself appears to be becoming more unstable from the inside out.
Now, Season 2 has the opportunity to go even further with the conflict, and to examine the dangerous consequences of rebellion in one of television’s darkest fictional worlds.
