A Chaotic Ending That Sets Up Bigger Drama To Come
The Off Campus Season 1 finale had a lot riding on it, and Episode 8 made sure to leave viewers with plenty to talk about.
It was a tight package of romance, tension, and just enough chaos to keep the Briar University story moving — from emotional reconciliations to career-ending consequences and a final bar fight that practically screams “Season 2 setup.”
Longtime fans of the novels may still be divided over this adaptation, but this finale certainly played to the drama of television. Some of the changes worked better than we expected. Others seemed like they were there just to make trouble. Either way, the ending made one thing clear: The story at Briar is far from finished.
Garrett and Hannah Face What Went Wrong at Last
The emotional heart of the finale is Garrett and Hannah.
Both awkwardly orbit around each other in the aftermath of the break-up, unable to move on entirely, but unable to address the hurt between them either. Their separation gives some of the quieter, more effective moments of the episode.
Then there’s the ludicrous misnomer of the so-called campus-wide “no-dating rule”.
Rumors have it that Garrett somehow banned other guys from pursuing Hannah, which causes her to storm into the hockey locker room looking for answers, only to find absolute chaos. It’s the kind of moment that brings needed comedy to an otherwise emotionally heavy episode.
Fortunately, the reality is much less dramatic. Garrett was not involved in it. It was just a stupid rumor that spiraled out of control, which is par for the course for college campus gossip.
But the real turning point comes later, when Hannah finds Garrett during one of his lowest points.
Now Garrett is thinking about walking away from hockey forever. Hannah reminds Garrett of something he obviously forgot, that he loved the sport well before it became associated with his father’s expectations.
It’s one of the most powerful moments in the episode because it finally reframes Garrett’s journey. This isn’t about rebellion anymore. Or trying to prove something to Phil. It’s about knowing who he is without the pressure of years.
And yes, reconciliation was inevitable.
When Garrett asks Hannah for another chance after her showcase performance, it’s earned enough to satisfy viewers who have been waiting all season for them to find their way back to each other.
NCAA Twist Changes the Game for Briar Hockey
Garrett’s emotional readiness to move on is met with a devastating blow to his hockey future.
The NCAA investigation footage shows him skating with Boston Bruins players while still an amateur athlete. Even with his explanation that the skates were only practice sessions, the ruling is harsh and immediate.
He’s not eligible for the draft.
Even worse, because of the violation, Briar University forfeits all of its season wins.
This development raises the stakes big time. For a show that is about, among other things, hockey culture, to take away its star player’s future has real stakes.
Garrett choosing to give up captaincy to Logan before the next game was a really solid character moment. It was a sign of maturity and acceptance, even if the suspension itself was a bit over the top.
The bigger question now is what this means for the future.
And if Off Campus is going to keep stretching its adaptation out over multiple seasons, Garrett’s uncertain athletic future could be one of its strongest long-term story lines.
The finale’s most brutal twist comes courtesy of Dean and Allie
If Garrett and Hannah delivered emotional closure, Dean and Allie delivered pure disaster.
The two have spent the season dancing around commitment, and Episode 8 forces both characters to finally face what they actually want.
Allie’s argument that they should start seeing other people because they’ve accidentally become exclusive is painfully believable. It’s the kind of self-sabotaging logic that defines college relationships.
Meanwhile Dean finally realises he wants something real.
There’s just one problem.
He waits too late.
He finally finds the courage to tell her how he feels only to find out she’s already been with someone else.
That would have been stinging enough.
And then the final act delivers its knockout punch.
Dean’s arch nemesis, Hunter Davenport, is the mystery hookup.
As soon as the second Hunter walks into Malone’s, the tension explodes and the season ends with a full-blown brawl that guarantees Hunter will be a major player next season.
This was classic season-finale television: messy, dramatic, and unignorable.
Hannah’s Showcase Performance Is Her Real Triumph
One of the less noisy triumphs of the episode is Hannah regaining her confidence.
Finally telling Allie the truth about her assault, Hannah begins to reconnect with the creative part of herself that she has buried for so long.
She’s less concerned with winning than she is with finding her voice again as she returns to the pop showcase.
Finishing second doesn’t sound like much, but in story terms it makes sense.
It feels real.
Not every breakthrough has to be a first-place finish. Sometimes progress is just showing up, doing the thing and showing yourself you can still do the thing.
The internship opportunity attached to her placement gives her storyline meaningful forward momentum going forward.
What the Finale Tells Us About Season 2
The finale strongly suggests that the main focus next season will be on Dean and Allie.
This fits the larger Off Campus universe, where each relationship eventually comes into its own.
Hunter’s arrival also offers the potential for greater expansion into the world of Briar U, something readers of the books will recognize instantly.
There are definite signs that the show wants to expand its universe beyond the original Season 1 focus, and that could work well if the writing tightens up.
The challenge though, still lies in balancing fan expectations.
The series still makes major creative departures from its source material. Some viewers enjoy the fact that you don’t know what’s going to happen. Others will likely continue to be frustrated by how loosely it adapts beloved moments.
Summary
Episode 8 is patchy, sometimes too full and sometimes a little too keen to create drama.
But it’s also fun.
The finale wraps up Garrett and Hannah’s emotional arcs, creates interesting complications for Dean and Allie, and leaves some tension that needs to be resolved in a potential second season.
It might not completely satisfy the purists of the novels, but as a television finale that is meant to keep audiences invested, it definitely gets the job done.
Score: 7.5/10
A chaotic but fun ending that wraps up one story at Briar University, while leaving the door open for even larger conflicts to come.
