Maximum Pleasure Episode 3 Guaranteed cranks up the tension with a mix of psychological suspense, online scams and emotional family conflict. The story moves quickly as Paula finds herself caught between a deadly stalker, threatening phone calls and a custody battle that could change Hazel’s future forever.
The episode opens with another camboy named Sky streaming to his viewers, before cutting back to Paula’s complicated personal life. Karl and Mallory sit down with her to talk about Hazel’s future and make a huge proposal. They want Paula to move with them to Boise, Idaho and have promised to support her financially, including housing and a car. Paula is taken aback by the offer but says she needs to think about it.
Meanwhile, Dennis starts to track Paula himself. He finds a restaurant she likes, using tissues from a pink bag with Hazel’s soccer cleats she left behind. He then scopes out local elementary schools and comes up with a disturbing plan. Dennis buys a bunch of identical shoes, puts tracking devices in them, and secretly drops them into school lost-and-found bins, hoping one will eventually find its way to Hazel.
Meanwhile, Paula’s work troubles escalate as she gets another threatening call from an unknown number. The caller wants a wire transfer of $15,000 before 3 p.m. Paula panics and tries to call Detective Gonzales, but he doesn’t return her calls. As the deadline looms, her anxiety grows more intense.
Elsewhere, Detective Gonzales and Jim search Trevor’s house for evidence. But their search leads them to Trevor’s neighbour who gives information about a boyfriend called Dennis – another piece of the puzzle towards the killer’s real identity.
Back in the office Paula goes to the bank, while Geri furtively searches through her open laptop. Meanwhile, Dennis gets a call from someone who claims to be “Tech Support.” The caller states they have gone through all company records on a contractor and have all accounted for. But he also talks about finding videos of people who were never supposed to be targets. Dennis orders to erase everything fast.
Paula does something clever at the bank, transferring only one dollar to the scammer’s account instead of the full amount. When one of Dennis’ tracking devices later goes off, this decision becomes important. He follows the signal and sees Mallory picking up Hazel.
Soon after Paula receives an angry reply from the scammer. The transfer receipt enabled her to trace the account to a company called OBG Properties, she says. The scammer threatens to kill Trevor if she doesn’t send the rest of the money but Paula shocks them by saying Trevor is already dead.
The caller, a young woman named Ash, is shocked at the revelation, and immediately tries to get hold of Trevor herself.
Dennis continues to follow Mallory, meanwhile watching Hazel being dropped off with Karl for soccer practice. While tracking Mallory he receives a call from Detective Gonzales that Trevor, whose legal name is Jeff Thorwald, is dead. Dennis looked devastated but kept up his surveillance, showing how dangerous and manipulative he is.
The episode is also very much about Paula’s emotional struggles. At soccer practice, she begins to bond with co-coach Steve, as Karl asks if she’s reconsidered the Boise offer. Paula is quite adamant about this and says she wants Hazel to see that she can stand up for herself and not let her ex-husband make all the decisions. The conversation ends with Paula agreeing to take the custody battle to court.
Jim tells Detective Gonzales that Paula’s fingerprints were found on the hockey stick used in connection with Trevor’s death. Detective Gonzales later finds more disturbing evidence. Paula’s car is on security video leaving the crime scene. Gonzales is suspicious and asks how Paula’s fingerprints are already in the police system.
Dennis abducts Mallory when she takes a bike ride in the woods. This is the darkest moment of the episode. He covers her head and drags her away but sees she does not have the tattoo on her ankle that he saw on Paula. Dennis, realizing he has the wrong woman, fakes the incident as a robbery and flees.
In the final moments, Detective Gonzales confronts Paula and hints that Trevor’s murder was not the first dead body she has encountered. She makes Paula tell her what really happened in Portland, setting up an even bigger mystery for episodes to come.
Review
Episode 3 is able to add to the mystery and keep several plots going at once and losing steam. The show continues to blend murder investigation, online fraud and personal drama into a tense and entertaining thriller.
Paula is the emotional center of the story, and her decision to confront Karl adds to the emotional weight of the episode. Her little though smart play against the scammers adds another layer to the unfolding conspiracy.
Tatiana Maslany has another strong performance as Paula, credible in her fear, determination and emotional exhaustion. Murray Bartlett is as good as Dennis, especially in the disturbing scene where he fakes mourning Trevor, while actively stalking Mallory.
But not every subplot works out perfectly. Even the scenes with Rudy and Geri are still somewhat removed from the main storyline, lacking the emotional weight or tension found in the rest of the episode. Still don’t know what they are doing in the story.
There are weaker moments, but Episode 3 still builds suspense well and leaves a lot of big questions unanswered. As Dennis becomes more dangerous and Detective Gonzales gets closer to Paula, the series continues to get more intense with each episode.
