Deli Boys S2 launches another crazy ride of dark comedy, criminal antics and family dysfunction. The premiere does not pull any punches as it puts the DarCo crew in peril and introduces a massively powerful new player that could disrupt the future of their operation altogether.
A Nasty Beginning to the DarCo Crew
The episode begins in the midst of a robbery at the deli. Two masked men burst into the store. This immediately sets the tone of tension, before the story flashes back several hours earlier.
That morning Raj, Mir and Lucky go to meet the infamous Max Sugar in hopes that he can help clean their illegal money. Before he even appears, Raj and Mir are completely bowled over by his flashy office. Sugar’s dramatic entrance adds to the intimidation factor and he quickly starts toying with Mir for his nervous reaction.
But, after the awkward beginning Mir gets right down to business and sells their laundering operation. Raj attempts to discuss old surveillance tapes linked to Ahmad, but Lucky steers the conversation. Sugar finally offers to manage their money for a fat 20% cut, but Lucky immediately dumps the deal.
Max Sugar Takes the Cake
Max Sugar immediately becomes one of the most entertaining characters on the show. Every scene is a mix of charm, menace and absurd humour.
This is well illustrated in one moment where he catches a player in a casino cheating. Sugar doesn’t take this calmly. She humiliates the man by making him chew on casino dice before dragging him away. The sequence is a good fit for the show’s odd mix of comedy and menace.
Meanwhile, the show teases a budding romance between Lucky and Sugar. The constant bargaining is not so much business as a kind of flirtation, and it establishes a complicated relationship for the future.
Andrew Chadwater’s Political Campaign
Away from the deli, the episode also introduces mayoral candidate Andrew Chadwater, who’s running a hard-line campaign against drugs. His newest worry is a viral trend called “Jawnies,” where people mix drugs with water ice and then film reckless stunts online.
Andrew’s personal frustrations soon come to the fore when his assistant mentions his ex-husband Craig by mistake. Andrew becomes emotional, blaming DarCo for Craig’s addiction, before firing his assistant in a heated exchange.
The political storyline adds another layer of conflict that could one day come into collision with the DarCo family’s burgeoning criminal business.
The Deli Plunges into Chaos
Back at the store, Deli Boys style, things go belly-up.
The crew’s assistant, Matthew, admits to hiding the cash in the deli as instructed. Unfortunately, Raj’s homemade security traps are still in place and Mir accidentally sets one off. Darts fly across the room, hitting Matthew, who begs to be taken to the hospital while Raj and Mir blame each other for the disaster.
In the meantime Lucky is back at Sugar’s casino for a private night meeting. The casino was closed down except for one private blackjack table set up for the two of them.
Sugar finally agrees to launder their money for them, but only if Lucky agrees to go on another date with her. The negotiation is a blackjack bet where business and romance are completely intertwined. Lucky finally gives in, adding another layer of risk to their already precarious partnership.
The Robbery Goes Wrong
Finally, the story catches up to the opening scene of the robbery, with the masked attackers cornering the DarCo crew in the deli.
Raj’s traps spectacularly backfire, leaving everyone exposed. Just when things seem hopeless, Max Sugar shows up with Lucky’s belongings. Sugar doesn’t panic, she calmly proposes to the robbers a game of chance.
The criminals soon find out they are up against the man who destroyed the Camden Gang. Sugar corrects them casually, explaining that technically the gang “lost a dice game.”
One robber chooses right and believes he has lived, but Sugar secretly has the other robber killed outside nonetheless. This scene is a perfect example of how dangerous Sugar really is beneath the charming exterior.
Lucky is impressed with his power and loyalty, and agrees to mix business with pleasure.
Ahmad is still a threat
After the robbery, the crew starts working through Sugar’s laundering network. As the new season kicks off, Raj is convinced Ahmad may have been involved in the attack on the deli, meaning one of the biggest threats from Season 1 is still alive.
The episode ends with Andrew Chadwater learning that the DarCo family has been spotted at the Sugar Palace Casino. Andrew decides to see for himself and heads to the casino, suggesting that several plots are about to converge.
Episode Summary
The premiere of Season 2 manages to deliver all the things that made Deli Boys fun in the first place. All the sharp sarcasm, chaotic energy and dark humor is completely intact.
Max Sugar is the clear standout of the episode. His unpredictable personality adds a new energy to the series and his scenes with Lucky create a strange combination of tension, comedy and discomfort that somehow works.
The show still tackles cultural stereotypes in a sophisticated manner that allows for humor without trivializing the characters. That balance makes the comedy more intelligent than a lot of other crime comedies.
Ahmad is still lurking in the background, political pressure is mounting, and DarCo is growing deeper into organized crime. The season feels bigger and much more dangerous already.
