The Start of a Perilous Path
A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder Season 2 Episode 4 goes darker with the investigation as Pippa follows another cryptic clue related to Jamie’s disappearance. The episode begins with Layla sending Pippa the location of a graveyard and then deleting the account suddenly, shutting all communication down and making Pippa more suspicious than ever.
Ravi and Connor go with Pippa to the graveyard, in the hope that the place will provide another piece of the jigsaw. Pippa is searching on her own when she comes across a familiar name on one of the gravestones and suddenly realizes the connection to the strange note Jamie left earlier in the season.
Apparently Jamie left some cash hidden inside a bouquet of flowers near the grave for Layla. Connor also finds something creepy about the note Jamie wrote. It was in the backwards spelling style that Ravi used to write words, and it made Jamie feel uncomfortable. Was he copying Ravi deliberately? Was he trying to frame him somehow?
Stanley Finally Confesses
Things take a turn for the worse when Stanley arrives at the graveyard and finally confesses the truth about the memorial night CCTV footage. He says Max pressured him to edit the footage to create a fake alibi.
Stanley confesses because he thinks Max might be up to something worse. His fear indicates that Max’s behavior has spiraled far beyond manipulation and lies.
Meanwhile, Max is in trouble at home after his mother Rosie finds the drugs stashed in his things. Upset, she exposes his crimes and threatens to take the evidence to the police. Max desperately tries to stop her, promising to plead guilty if only she will stay.
But his desperation seems more like manipulation than anything else. It’s apparent that Max is trying to protect himself rather than take responsibility.
Daniel Learns the Truth—
Elsewhere, Pippa questions Daniel about Jamie’s disappearance. Things get tense when she sees blood in his car and fears the worst for a moment. Daniel quickly explains that the blood is his own, and that Max blackmailed him to threaten Jamie before the trial.
Daniel says Jamie hit him and then it got violent.
Things get even more emotional when Pippa reveals Nat was one of Max’s assault victims. Daniel is devastated to find out that his own sister was hurt due to Max and blames himself for not seeing it sooner. Pippa tells him that in the end Max will pay for everything he has done.
Chaos in the court room
Before going into court, Pippa pushes Max for answers about the night Jamie disappeared. Max says he met Howie that evening but will not say what he bought from him. He also casually mentions seeing Jamie later that night, adding one more confusing detail to the timeline.
Max even tries to use Ravi, saying he will help him get his job back if Pippa backs off the investigation. Pippa shuts him down immediately and won’t let him use Sal’s name again for sympathy.
Later, Ravi confronts Pippa for lying in his memorial speech. Ravi, though wounded, continues to support her investigation, while Pippa regrets putting the case before his feelings.
The conversation unexpectedly allows Pippa to work out the password to Jamie’s laptop.
Jamie’s Laptop And A Disturbing Discovery
Pippa finds several alarming searches relating to brain cancer inside the laptop. She digs a little further, and checks the health tracking app on Jamie’s, which shows evidence of his heart stopping shortly after 12:15 AM, which is almost exactly when Max says he saw him alive.
Pippa knew the clock was ticking and sent a mass email asking the students to help look for Jamie.
Having noticed suspicious comments associated with Layla’s dating profile, she interrogates Mr. Clark at the same time. Mr Clark has admitted that he matched with Layla online and she pretended to be terminally ill.
Finally, Pippa pieces it together: Layla is a catfish scammer, who preys on rich men online, and Jamie probably came into her orbit after lying about being a successful businessman himself.
Max Turns Sal Back Into the Villain
The courtroom scenes are so frustrating when Max tries to put the blame for the assaults on Sal Singh in his testimony. Every time Ravi hears his dead brother falsely accused, it’s almost too much to bear.
Sal had had enough, after being wrongfully accused of Andie’s murder, before losing his own life. Max uses him as a shield, as a way to avoid accountability, which makes the case more cruel.
The trial is nearing its end and both sides present their closing arguments . Meanwhile , the students are still trying to find Jamie using information from his health app .
Finally the investigation leads Pippa, Ravi and Connor to the greenhouse of Jason Bell. Pippa begs Jason to let them search the property. She is sure there is evidence, relating to Jamie, hidden there. Jason, instead of aiding, is consumed with how Max’s increasing scandals are destroying his reputation and business.
The episode ends with Ravi and Connor giving Pippa a knife Jamie stole from Connor’s house, suggesting that the mystery surrounding Jamie may be even more dangerous than they thought.
Review: Episode
This episode really does a good job of building the tension while showing just how manipulative Max is. His decision to pin the assaults on Sal was easily the most infuriating moment of the season so far. Sal has already been made the tragic scapegoat of this story, and to see his name dragged through the mud again just makes Max all the more despicable.
The series also continues to explore how much control Max has over those in his orbit. Fear, guilt or manipulation almost holds everyone, whether it is Stanley, Daniel or even his own mother.
Pippa’s investigation is still the best element of the show as every discovery seems to mean something. The clues around Layla, Jamie’s laptop and the health app all come together nicely and they add to the suspense with each episode.
But at the end of Episode 4 there are big questions for the viewers about what will happen to Jamie and whether Pippa is getting too close to the full truth.
