The second season of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder kicks off with a tense and disturbing scene of Pippa Fitz-Amobi frantically trying to revive someone, while police cars surround the scene. Then the series goes back two weeks and shows how things spun out of control in the lead up to that fateful night.
Pippa is still dealing with the fallout from the Andy Bell and Sal Singh investigation. She thinks about starting a six-part podcast on the case, hoping to finally set the record straight and reveal the truth. Ravi is very much in favour of the idea and even comes up with a title, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. Pippa is hesitant at first but then eventually takes the initiative.
Meanwhile, life in Little Kilton will not settle down. Pippa, Ravi and Cara attend Connor’s birthday party where the guests take part in a murder mystery game. Everyone else is having a good time, but Pippa soon spots Connor’s brother Jamie looking nervous and distracted. Even in a fictional game, she can’t help but want to explain inconsistencies and suspicious behavior.
That night, Pippa puts the podcast online. Shortly after, she sees a person running from outside her house, giving immediately a sense of danger around the release.
Fallout From Max Hastings Trial
The episode also continues the Max Hastings storyline. Pippa finds out that Becca has chosen not to give evidence against him and she is frustrated and shocked. Victor tells Pippa that the truth will out but it is clear that the situation is taking its toll on everybody involved.
Pippa is determined to change Becca’s mind and contacts Jason Bell and later arranges a prison visit. Meanwhile, Max’s lawyers warn him of another witness, known only as ‘Woman A’. One of the biggest questions left unanswered by the episode is the mystery of the unnamed witness.
As Pippa’s podcast is broadcast throughout the school, the reactions become more and more complicated. Cara struggles with the renewed attention on the case, and she confronts Pippa head-on about the dangers of raking up the past. The podcast might be uncovering the truth, but it’s clearly affecting the people around her.
When Pippa visits the prison, she finds Jamie’s name on the witness list for Max’s trial. This revelation immediately raises new questions about Jamie’s involvement, and what he may be hiding.
Ravi and Pippa Draw Closer and Closer
The bond between Pippa and Ravi is still one of the best parts of the episode. Ravi’s support never wavers, even when Pippa pulls back emotionally or is crushed by guilt.
Ravi gives a heartfelt speech at Andie and Sal’s memorial, searching for Pippa in the crowd. During the speech, he tells her how he feels in front of everyone, which is one of the sweetest moments in the episode. But Pippa misses out on a lot of it after secretly meeting with Max, who tries to intimidate her into dropping the case.
Max’s threats get more personal, telling Pippa that Ravi’s internship could be on the line if she continues to testify against him. The scene drives home how manipulative Max still is, and solidifies the danger surrounding the investigation.
Later that night Pippa receives a drunken voice message from Cara asking for help at a party. Even when Cara blames Pippa for ruining her life, Pippa still ensures she gets home safe. Their friendship appears to be breaking down more and more, but the emotional intricacies between them make the conflict plausible.
Jamie’s Disappearance Changes Everything
The episode delivers its biggest twist as Pippa contemplates deleting the podcast for Cara’s sake. Then, from out of nowhere, Connor shows up at her house and tells her Jamie is missing.
Season 2, unlike the first, which was more focused on solving a murder, starts off with a missing person mystery. That shift gives the story a fresh direction while keeping the suspense and emotional drama that made the first season so gripping.
Review of Episode 1
The Season 2 premiere is a great balance of emotional fallout and set-up for a brand-new mystery. The opening sequence immediately sets the tone as tension, and the episode steadily builds unease as secrets continue piling up around Jamie’s disappearance.
One of the best things about the show is the chemistry between Pippa and Ravi. Ravi’s confession is genuinely touching, though it’s clear that Pippa is still conflicted and not quite ready to reciprocate his feelings in the same way.
And it is understandable that Cara too is frustrated with Pippa. She said the investigation destroyed the stability of her life and friendships. The series does a good job of showing that telling the truth can still hurt innocent people along the way.
The mystery of “Woman A” is particularly tantalizing for viewers who have read the novels. The choice to keep that identity a secret indicates the show could be gearing up for some big changes to the original story, including potential new twists and more victims as the season rolls on.
Overall: Episode 1 is a good start for the new season with emotional conflict, new suspense and enough unanswered questions to keep viewers invested in what happens next.
