The last episode of Sold Out On You is all fans would expect from the series, with emotional showdowns, dramatic turns, heartfelt reconciliations and a full round of happy endings. The finale is very melodramatic but it also manages to tie up almost all of the storylines in a satisfying way.
Matthew Finds Out the Truth About Chang-ho
Episode 12 begins with a flash back to a happier time with Matthew, Chang-ho, Mu-won and Woo-su. Back in the present, Chang-ho admits that Matthew’s investment kept USU afloat years ago.
Woo-su recalls in another flashback that he had picked Matthew over Chang-ho to lead a big project, despite the latter being more experienced. He feels neglected, betrayed and uses this moment to justify his resentment and destructive behaviour. However, Matthew refuses to forgive his behavior and walks away from the conversation.
Outside, Ye-jin consoles Matthew and reminds him how far he’s come since arriving in Deokpung years ago. Matthew shares how a random bus ride changed his life unexpectedly and led him to the people that became his family.
Yun-ji reveals the Noori Cream scandal
The next day Yun-ji confesses her involvement in the Good Morning Cream incident. She tells him about Chang-ho bribing testers to make false claims about the product and authorities raid his office almost immediately.
Meanwhile, Michelle’s fall from grace begins at L’Etoile. Having lost, she is ready to leave the country and discreetly covers her tracks by taking care of the factory manager who knows about her involvement.
Luckily Eric and Joong-hoon find the manager before she can shut him up. After a tense chase, he presents evidence that Michelle ordered extra microbes to be added to the essence formula. When the truth comes out, Michelle is fired from the company.
Before she leaves, Michelle tells Eric one last painful truth, that she was nice to him just to please her father. Eric says nothing, wordlessly resigned to the end of their relationship.
Matthew watches over the Villagers
In a fit of rage, Chang-ho hires some gangsters to destroy Matthew’s mushroom farm. What follows is one of the most enjoyable moments in the finale.
Kwang-mo and the villagers, armed with leaf blowers, mosquito rackets and farming tools, rush to Matthew’s defence. The fight scene is a riotous mix of comedy and real warmth, as the entire community bands together to defend one of its own.
Finally the attackers are caught before they can leave town.
Later, Woo-su’s death causes Matthew to fear a re-enactment after receiving a disturbing apology text from Chang-ho. He runs to Chang-ho’s office, where he finds Chang-ho standing dangerously close to the edge of the rooftop.
Matthew begs him to live, to take responsibility, not to run away. But Chang-ho leaps, and somehow Matthew is there to catch him before disaster hits.
Ye-jin and Her Mother Make Up
After the crisis, Ye-jin busily prepared another live broadcast for the launch of the Noori cream. Director Dong says Myung-hwa played a big part in persuading Yun-ji to tell the truth and this encourages Ye-jin to get in touch with her mother.
Their relationship starts to mend when Ye-jin asks Myung-hwa to co-host the upcoming broadcast. On the day of the show, mother and daughter are on air together, and the event is a great success, with all the products selling out.
Following the broadcast, Myung-hwa sincerely apologizes for the pain she caused through the years. Ye-jin forgives her. The two embrace in a tearful reconciliation.
Ye-jin also finds out that she unfairly blamed her father for much of her family’s pain. She apologizes to him too, finally fixing one more broken relationship.
Later, in one small but telling scene, we see Ye-jin’s sleeping medication in the trash, confirming her emotional healing.
Mu-won and Ae-ra: Will They End Up Together?
Yes, Mu-won and Ae-ra are officially a couple at the end of the final episode.
In one scene they run into Ae-ra’s ex-boyfriend. Mu-won tells him that the man has been involved in a number of marriage fraud schemes and walks away proudly hand-in-hand with Ae-ra.
The episode also includes updates for a few other characters:
Jin-yi becomes an assistant host on Ye-jin’s team.
Kwang-mo is a successful Youtuber.
Sung-mi proposes that she and Kwang-mo should live together.
Eric is appointed the new CEO of L’Etoile and goes back to France with Joong-hun.
Mrs Yang cooks a birthday meal in memory of her dead son, which she never got to cook for him before he died.
Ending Explained: Matthew and Ye-jin’s Happy Ending
At the end of the episode, Matthew makes a new serum and shows it to HIT. As expected, he and Ye-jin are soon arguing over trivial things again and their chemistry is still there.
The finale also hints at the fact that Jin-yi and Ki-hong are dating.
Back home, Ye-jin asks Matthew when he began falling for her. His answer is the perfect distillation of the emotional core of their relationship: he knew he was in love when he started worrying whether or not she was sleeping well.
During the credits at the end of the series, clips show the whole cast. The final scene shows Matthew and Ye-jin sleeping peacefully together, offering a warm and comforting ending to the drama.
Review of Episode
The tone of the Sold Out On You finale stays in line with the series, delving into emotional drama and over-the-top villains. Chang-ho and Michelle often come across as more theatrical than realistic, especially in the farm attack storyline.
But the villagers coming to the rescue of Matthew is one of the best moments of the episode. The sequence is funny and surprisingly touching, too, and shows the sense of community that was always the show’s greatest strength.
Chang-ho’s backstory attempts to explain his bitterness towards Matthew, but the writing never really fleshes out his motivations. Likewise, the Eric/Michelle conflict isn’t all that emotionally deep, though it takes up a lot of screen time throughout the series.
Even so, the finale works where it counts. Almost every story line has a good ending, the main relationships are fixed and the main couples all have a satisfying ending.
Sold Out While On may never be anything more than an average K-drama overall, Episode 12 delivers a heartfelt conclusion that fans of the series will likely enjoy.
