The Legend of Kitchen Soldier Episode 6 Review: Chaos, Betrayal and Risky Discovery

The Legend of Kitchen Soldier Episode 6 is one of the more intense chapters of the series so far. It is a fast-paced tale of survival on the battlefield that mixes military action, comedy and a growing sense of suspense. The episode still has its trademark humor but darker secrets are slowly coming to light amidst the KCTC training mission.

KCTC Training Starts

The episode opens at Ganglim Post where the soldiers are getting ready for their grueling KCTC exercises. Seong-jae is determined to improve himself even more and hopes the next mission will help him level up even further. But Mun-ik quickly kills any hope by reminding him that their opponents are the dreaded Viper Unit, a team notorious for taking every simulation as a real war.

Inside the camp, tension already runs high. Dong-hyun is still pissed about the leave requests being canceled and he vents on everyone around. Even Seong-jae, who boasts of his improved cooking skills, becomes a target. But Dong-hyun’s anger melts away the moment he tries Seong-jae’s food.

Seok-ho, meanwhile, gazes at Ye-rin from a distance. He was told not to get emotionally involved with her but it is clear that he cannot stop worrying about her safety.

Camp Disaster Strikes

But unlike normal training exercises, the soldiers have to survive under the grueling conditions of wartime. Seong-jae and Dong-hyun are forced to cook food in an old kitchen trailer that barely works.

Things quickly go out of control.

Their first meal spreads a terrible food poisoning through the camp, destroying morale and sending soldiers into panicked scramble. The camp is trying to recover when the Viper Unit uses the confusion to launch a devastating attack, taking out several members of the team.

Seok-ho is cracking under pressure, and that is making the soldiers even more afraid. Luckily, Ye-rin comes in and calls for a retreat before things can get even worse.

Visitor with Malicious Intent

After moving to a new base, the weary soldiers still struggle with hunger and low morale. Chef’s Path gives Seong-jae his next task — to unite the team through food.

That night, Mun-ik and Sang-wook are on guard duty when a suspicious civilian appears near the camp. One soldier wants to inform on the stranger, but the other says he is harmless.

Seong-jae feels something is wrong.

He can see with his strange powers that the man is far too nervous and excited. Later, Ye-rin searches the visitor and finds detonators in his pocket, realizing he is an infiltrator sent by the enemy.

The incident leads to a harsh punishment for the careless guards and further proves how vulnerable the team has become.

The Supply Mission

Conditions deteriorate, the soldiers run out of their remaining rations and the kitchen trailer completely breaks down. Training is nearly impossible without food and equipment.

Seong-jae suggests grabbing the stolen supplies before the enemy can move them. Ye-rin agrees, despite the risks. A small group sets out on a dangerous mission.

The operation becomes one of the episode’s best action sequences. Ye-rin and Seong-jae sneak in while Dong-hyun and Jae-young distract the guards. A hidden sniper almost gets them, but Jae-young’s experience saves the team at the last second.

They manage to return the supplies safely, but are reprimanded for leaving the base without permission.

Fried rice balls save soldiers

Seong-jae retrieves the supplies and gets a new ingredient, Masittashi, and makes rice balls in an attempt to improve morale. Unfortunately, the soldiers, tired and exhausted, hate them.

And just when Seong-jae thinks he has failed his mission, he remembers Dong-hyun telling him how soldiers love fried food, no matter how it tastes.

That makes all the difference.

Seong-jae makes the rice balls into fried rice balls and the response is instant. Even Seok-ho is overcome by the explosion of flavor. For the first time since the training began, the soldiers regain their energy and fighting spirit.

Again, the series shows that food is the emotional heart of the story.

Min-gu, The Truth

The last moments of the episode turn thriller-like.

One night, Seong-jae overhears a secret phone conversation inside an abandoned camp. The soldier says mysteriously that there’s no one left to meddle, that Ye-rin could also be “taken care of” if need be.

Minutes later, the shocking reveal.

The man who made the call was Lee Min-gu.

Seong-jae starts to see that he has uncovered something far more important than military corruption. He panics and tries to run away. But Min-gu sees him and immediately follows through the dark woods.

The episode ends on a cliffhanger, with Seong-jae hanging from a cliff for dear life when a branch breaks.

Review of Episode

Episode 6 strikes a very good balance of comedy, action and suspense, but also takes the story into much darker territory. The training at the KCTC is always tense, but the real draw is the mystery that is growing around the corruption of the military base.

Seong-jae continues to become a stronger and smarter character. Every challenge makes him adapt and his ability to support the team with his cooking gives the series its unique identity.

Meanwhile, the episode starts to finally reveal the larger conspiracy teased all season. The reveal of Min-gu turns the tone of the story on its head entirely and brings up major questions of how deep the corruption really goes.

The stakes have never been higher and Seong-jae is now squarely in the crosshairs. Episode 7 could be the turning point of the whole series.
