The Scarecrow Episode 12 Review and Recap
The final episode of The Scarecrow is an emotional wrap-up, with courtroom revelations, broken family bonds and justice at last. The finale tries to answer the big mystery, but leaves a sadness for the lives destroyed during the case.
The episode starts with Ki-hwan thinking about the increasing suspicion around his admission on the seventh murder. He tells Tae-joo he’s ready to testify at Seok-man’s retrial, desperate to clear the confusion and shed light on the truth.
The Retrial of Seok-man Changes Everything
In the court room, Attorney Cha aggressively cross-examines former officers Hyung-gu and Myung-do and Police Commissioner Dae-ho. The retrial reveals the flaws in the first investigation and shows how Seok-man was wrongfully convicted with false evidence from the isotope analysis of Tae-joo from years before.
Tae-joo confesses to his wrongdoings in public, and apologizes to Seok-man in court. For Tae-joo, who’s been carrying guilt over the case for decades, it becomes one of the most emotional moments of the episode.
But this time, the retrial takes a shocking turn when Seong-jin testifies about being tortured in the custody. The retired officers, he says, forced him to confess as the serial killer, revealing the corruption that lay behind the investigation for years.
Outside the court, Young-beom begins to link the people involved in the cover-up. He searches through old files and discovers that several influential people, including Si-young, received rewards following the arrest of Seok-man.
Tae-joo and Ji-won Meet Again Decades Later
The episode also places great emphasis on the reunion of Tae-joo and Ji-won. The two finally meet again after thirty years apart and discuss the unresolved pain of the murders. Ji-won agrees to help Tae-joo find out the whole truth about Hye-jin’s disappearance.
Meanwhile, Ji-won continues to search for Hye-jin, still hoping that there may be some answers to find. Meanwhile, Ki-hwan is under increasing fire for Gi-beom’s death, with Ji-won directly blaming him for leaving the child in the car years ago.
Live Broadcast Reveals the Truth
And the finale has one of the most powerful scenes where Ji-won is broadcasting live on Noise Cut. She then persuades Ki-hwan to testify, and releases a confession video in which he confesses to killing Hye-jin, and reveals the officers involved in covering up her body.
Tae-joo’s appearance on the broadcast and his public reveal of Si-young sends shockwaves through everyone involved in the case. Ji-won fears that exposing a powerful assemblyman will endanger Tae-joo but he refuses to stay silent any longer.
Si-young’s family feels the effects immediately. Sun-young confronts him angrily about Hye-jin’s death, while Young-beom is in conflict about the truth about his uncle’s involvement. On a visit to Gi-beom’s grave, Sun-young also finally slips in that Tae-joo is Young-beom’s uncle, adding yet another emotional layer to the story.
Young-beom Finally Escapes from Si-young
During the hearing, Young-beom approaches Si-young and demands an apology to Hye-jin’s family. But Si-young denies responsibility in the courtroom, dismissing Ki-hwan’s confession as an attempt for attention.
It’s the final straw for Young-beom. Disillusioned with Si-young’s lies and refusal to take responsibility, he cuts ties completely.
Later Ki-hwan takes the stand and shocks everyone with the detailed description of the seventh murder. He also makes a sketch of the room where the teenage victim was killed, proving his confession is real. He admits that he regrets Seok-man being framed, but he cannot fully apologize for what he did.
Seok-man Finally Gets His Due
After years of suffering, Seok-man has been officially declared innocent. The court acquits him, closing one of the drama’s most tragic storylines.
One of the most moving moments of the finale is the reunion between Seok-man and his sister. Following decades behind bars, he finally gets the chance to meet his nephew and reconnect with what’s left of his family.
Meanwhile, Si-young’s personal life is starting to crumble as the allegations against him continue to spread publicly.
Tae-joo’s Last Goodbye to Ki-hwan
The next day, Young-beom calls Tae-joo “uncle” for the first time and the family begins to heal.
Later, Tae-joo comes to visit Ki-hwan one last time. He says he can’t investigate the case objectively because he’s personally connected to the victims. Instead, he intends to devote the rest of his life to seeking justice for Hye-jin’s family.
Ki-hwan asks Tae-joo to visit him as a friend but Tae-joo refuses unless he truly regrets his crimes.
Scarecrow Ending Explained
The drama ends on a bit of a bittersweet note. Tae-joo dreams of an alternate reality where Ki-hwan is not a killer and everyone can live in peace together. In this imagined world, none of those tragedies happened.
Tae-joo later tells Ji-won about the dream and asks if their lives would have been different had some choices been different long ago.
The Scarecrow, however, prefers to leave us with a more emotional and realistic note, rather than a total satisfaction. Seok-man gets justice, but many wounds are incurable.
Final Evaluation
Episode 12 packs a punch and delivers an emotional climax, but some viewers might be frustrated that some corrupt officials do not receive proper punishment. The closure audiences have been waiting for comes with Seok-man’s acquittal, while his reunion with family is one of the few hopeful moments in the drama.
The Scarecrow started as a great mystery thriller but the middle episodes felt repetitive at times after revealing Ki-hwan’s identity. A more lengthy redaction of the killer’s identity might have made the final reveal more effective.
But the drama works, thanks to its emotional heft and its tragic characters and its exploration of guilt, corruption and regret. The finale may not be entirely satisfying, but it makes an emotional impact that lingers.
