Episode 15 of Absolute Value of Romance is one of the most pivotal moments in the series as Eui-ju finally faces the consequences of her controversial writing project. The episode is a lot about accountability and personal growth but also continues to build the ever more complicated emotional relationship between Eui-ju and Woo-su, setting up a dramatic ending.
Disciplinary Hearing Begins
The episode opens with a tense morning as Eui-ju prepares for the disciplinary committee hearing that will determine her fate at school. Having breakfast with her parents, she seems calm outwardly, but the uncertainty of the meeting looms over her family.
Teachers and administrators get together to talk about the situation at school. The crux of the issue is that Eui-ju decided to base characters in her web novel on real people without their consent. Many have acknowledged that she is a good writer but there is a consensus that she crossed the line.
Principal Young-hee conducts the hearing, asking everyone concerned to give their opinions. The first to speak is Eui-ju’s mother. She apologizes profusely and asks the committee to take into account her daughter’s youth and naïveté. “She never intended to hurt anyone, and she deserves a chance to learn from her mistakes, not let them define her,” she said.
The teachers affected by the novel are also given the chance to respond. Da-ju is in a professional position and is confident in whatever the administration decides. Dong-ju emphasizes the importance of boundaries and consent when transforming real people into fictional characters. His comments are an extension of the ethical questions that have surrounded Eui-ju’s writing throughout the series.
But not everyone is in a rush to punish her. Gi-jeon is more lenient, arguing that young people should be given space to develop following errors. But some committee members still favor suspension, saying some type of disciplinary action is needed.
Woo-su takes responsibility
One of the most surprising moments of the hearing comes when Woo-su admits he was a part of the situation.
Instead of distancing himself from the controversy, he acknowledges that he knew about Eui-ju’s writing and did not discourage her from continuing. Woo-su says he recognized her exceptional talent and her passion for storytelling. This admiration made him choose to support her artistic ambitions, rather than think about the potential repercussions.
His confession complicates the narrative. Eui-ju is responsible for her choices, but Woo-su’s honesty shows that adults can also be wrong in advising young people.
Finally, Eui-ju is asked to speak and she apologizes from her heart. She takes responsibility for using real people as characters in her stories and acknowledges that her choices hurt others. At the same time she is not ready to give up on her dream of becoming a writer.
Her resolve is evident throughout the hearing. She says that even if she is kicked out, she is a writer at heart. This statement shows her maturity and her stubbornness, two defining characteristics of her character since the beginning of the series.
There are mixed opinions and Principal Young-hee says a decision will be made in four days.
waiting on judgement
After the hearing, Eui-ju seizes the chance to apologize to her teachers in person.
Some of the lighter moments in the episode are the interactions. Da-ju jokes that she might be sued and Dong-ju again emphasizes the importance of communication and consent when writing about real people. Even Gi-jeon, who admits he doesn’t quite understand the genre Eui-ju writes, praises her talent and encourages her to grow.
Eui-ju updates her friends on the hearing, and tells them that Woo-su had been aware of her novel for quite some time. To many of them the disclosure comes as a surprise and adds another level of understanding to their view of the situation.
In the meantime, faculty discussions continue. Some staff members say the success of Eui-ju’s novel has unexpectedly put a spotlight on the school. This is not to excuse what she did , but it adds another layer of ambiguity to what the proper punishment should be .
Young-hee is torn. She knows the seriousness of the crime and the possibility of rehabilitation. Therefore, the final verdict is not so simple.
A Relatively Gentle Result
The committee comes to its conclusion four days later.
Eui-ju gets a five day suspension.
The punishment is sufficient to recognise the harm she has done, but not as much as many had feared. Her friends quickly assure her that the suspension will not affect her academic future or her chances of getting into college.
It seems the choice is a balance of accountability and compassion. Eui-ju is forced to suffer consequences, but she is also given a chance to move on without a lingering stain on her record.
The outcome echoes one of the show’s recurring themes: mistakes should be corrected, but they don’t need to define a person endlessly.
Back to School
Woo-su collects his students after the suspension is announced and apologizes for his own failings as a teacher. He says he should have handled the situation differently and regrets encouraging Eui-ju without fully considering the ethical implications of her work.
Later Eui-ju thanks him for standing by her through the disciplinary process. She tells him that she is special to him because she was his first student.
It’s a warm and supportive conversation but it also continues to push emotional boundaries in ways that are still uncomfortable.
Eui-ju enjoys her suspension and the unexpected break from school, but she eventually returns to class. Her friends welcome her back with open arms, and this helps re-establish a sense of normalcy.
Ha-su also takes the opportunity to admit to her own mistakes. She confesses she was jealous because she herself had feelings for Woo-su. Her apology is a nice way to tie up one of the season’s long-running storylines and a level of honesty that’s often been missing from the characters.
Deul-i’s Big Break
The school’s preparation for Deul-i’s big presentation temporarily diverts attention from Eui-ju’s discipline issues.
Getting closer to the event, Eui-ju meets Deul-i and feels the tension. She offers words of encouragement, helping to build up Deul-i’s confidence before the speech.
Woo-su and Deul-i spend some time together, making Eui-ju jealous, meanwhile. Their interaction brings up new questions about Woo-su’s future and whether the series will explore a relationship between the two adults.
Deul-i’s speech was a hit, winning positive reviews from both students and faculty. She tells Woo-su she will miss competing against him in America and wishes he would come with her, as she gets ready to leave.
This scene feels important, suggesting possibilities beyond the school and maybe beyond the love triangle at the center of the story.
A confession I didn’t expect
The episode ends with one of its most dramatic moments.
Woo-su gives out a surprise quiz during an extra class. Finally Eui-ju came in and turned in her paper.
But instead of answering the questions, she covers the page with a confession of her love.
In the assignment she uses it as a personal letter to write about what she describes as the “absolute value” of her romance with Woo-su. It is a daring and passionate declaration that brooks no misunderstanding.
The episode ends right after the confession, which builds up huge anticipation for the season finale.
Review
The fifteenth episode deals well with the aftermath of Eui-ju’s actions, while letting her character experience real growth. The disciplinary arc is probably the best part of the episode because it brings up hard conversations about responsibility, creativity and ethics.
I think the suspension is a fair compromise, with accountability and forgiveness. It takes Eui-ju’s mistake seriously, but not to vilify her.
But the romantic plotline still remains the most controversial aspect of the show. Eui-ju’s feelings for Woo-su might be understandable coming from a teenager’s perspective, but the series continues to play with a student-teacher dynamic that leaves much to be desired. The final confession may add dramatic tension but viewers will no doubt be wishing Woo-su to respond with proper boundaries.
The episode also keeps on teasing the potential relationships with other characters, especially Deul-i, that leaves the audience clueless about where the story is headed ultimately.
With one episode left, Absolute Value of Romance has set itself up for an emotional and possibly divisive finale. Much will depend on how the finale handles the complex relationships that have been the signature of the show since its inception, and if it will be a satisfying conclusion.
